RFJM-22S is the rimfire jacket maker die set for
turning fired .22 LR (also 22 Long or Short) fired cases
into FREE .224 caliber rifle jackets.
The .22 LR is ideal for a .705 long (52-60 grain spitzer)
bullet jacket, after the head has been unfolded and ironed
smooth by this die. The jackets are excellent shooters,
with benchrest precision potential if the same lot and
type is used, fired from the same gun. They are also very
easy on the bore, since the .011 thick jackets engrave
easily compared to thicker commercial jackets. Also the
30% zinc content gives the jacket lower barrel friction.
The only drawback is that the jackets are both thin and
brittle, so they tend to explode on impact, or peel back
into four pointed stars with total loss of the core. This
does no harm for varmint and target shooting, but makes
them unsuitable both for high velocity loads (much over
3200 fps) and for edible game hunting. As varmint bullets
they are idea, since they force you to save your barrel
by loading down, and perform as if they are going 4000 fps
when they strike. There is seldom if ever a richochet once
the bullet touches ground.
