The CS-1-H core seating die can be used two ways.
It can be used to make a lead or semi-wadcutter jacketed
bullet, when used with a nose-forming punch. More often,
it is used to seat the core into a jacket, in preparation
for the point forming operation in the PF-1-H die.
The diameter of the core seater is slightly less (.001 to .005)
than the final diameter, which is achieved in the point
forming die. Therefore, a bullet finished in the core
seater is normally just slightly smaller than the bullet
finished in the associated point former.
The core seating die itself is usually specific to a
caliber, but the external punch that comes with the die
must be sized to fit either the ID of a specific jacket,
or for large lead tip bullets or SWC styles, it must fit
the ID of the die itself. Unless otherwise specified, a
punch will be provided that seems most logical for the
application. Typically this would be to make open tip
bullets in a commercial jacket, for calibers where Corbin
offers ready-made jackets, or to fit inside a standard
.035-wall tubing jacket for other calibers.
If you don't know what diameter of core seat punch is needed, and want to send sample jackets (6) or use our jackets for a specific weight open tip bullet, you can check the "discover" box, and we will discover the right diameter of punch by testing with the jacket you specify (and send, if it isn't one of ours). We need to know the weight so we can make cores of the proper length, and fit the punch to the ID of the jacket at that distance.
The time it takes to make cores, and seat them in your jackets by adjusting the punch diameter until it doesn't stick (and removing stuck jackets from the punch as the size is discovered) is anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes. The $25 discovery and fitting fee is less than the normal hourly shop rate. If you would like to provide the diameter, you can estimate it by subtracting 0.0003 inches from the final bullet diameter, then subtracting twice the jacket wall thickness at the position of your core height after seating. That will be close to the ID of the jacket after the core has been seated, and the jacket expanded to fit the core seat bore. Then no test and discovery time is required to make the punch to your specified diameter.
