The precision turned metal tips for .338 to .510
caliber bullets in Corbin's hybrid ULD-TIP ogive shape provide higher BC
than is otherwise possible with the same weight and
caliber of bullet in the standard Ultra Low Drag shape. The tips
are installed using a special PF-1-ST or PF-1-HT point form
and tip seating die. The -ST type dies have two ejection
punches. One forms a cavity for the stem of the tip insert.
The other aligns the tip and presses it into the bullet exactly
on the center axis. The ULD-TIP style bullet can be added
to any die set by purchasing the PF-1-ST, or the PF-1-HT.
The die, base punch, and two ejection punches are included
under this designation or catalog number, so you do not
have to order them separately. Any set of 3 or more dies
can be expanded to make the ULD-TIP bullet in this manner.

What is a hybrid ogive shape?
Hybrid ogives are a mixture of two or more different
shapes, blended into a smooth continuous form to reduce
drag and eliminate secondary shock waves from discontinuity
in the ogive curvature.
Secant ogives are formed from a
portion of a circle or arc of a given radius, the curve
of which intersects the bullet shank at some angle other
than 180-degrees or 0-degrees (depending on your preference
for measuring it).
Tangent ogives are a special case of
secant ogive in which the curve of the ogive arc joins
the shank of the bullet at exactly zero (or 180) degrees.
Spire point ogives have no curve, but are composed of a
conical shape (like a pencil point). As the radius is made
larger and larger at some point both
the secant and tangent ogive cannot be distinguished from a
spire point. (Any curve with a large enough radius will
for all practical purposes appear to be flat or straight.)
Tangent ogives are
often called "spitzer" shapes, from the German term for
"sharp". This is a very old terminology meant to
differentiate the tangent shape from the round nose or
eliptical ogive shape used in early rifle rounds.
Very few military rounds use anything but a "sharp"
ogive in modern times, but the term "spitzer" still refers to "tangent"
curves.
Corbin's ULD (Ultra Low Drag) ogive is a blend of a long
secant curve and a tangent curve, whereas the ULD-TIP ogive
has been modified to include tangent, secant, and spire
shapes, with seamless integration to maximize the ballistic
coefficient with reasonable weight and ogive lengths. High
BC can be achieved in other ways, such as large weight for
the caliber, or extremely long ogive curves, but these
methods can be self defeating by requiring impractical
twist rates, or excess pressure and recoil. The ULD-TIP
achieves the highest practical BC for a given caliber
and weight. Base drag is reduced by using the rebated
boattail instead of flat base (RBT trades a small amount
of BC for greater precision, by greatly reducing muzzle-blast
dispersion of the bullet due to the focusing effect of
a conventional BT base, breaking up laminar muzzle gas
flow around the bullet base and into a "ball of gas" in
front of the bullet. Instead, the RBT and the flat base
tend to deflect most of the muzzle gas in a ring, so there
is less turbulence in front of the bullet as it exits from
the bore. Also, the RBT provides a quicker release as
compared to a conventional boattail, by dropping the diameter
suddenly as the bullet emerges from the muzzle rather than
more slowly increasing the gap between bullet and barrel
as with the conventional boattail. The RBT is a sort of
hybrid design for the base, blending the benefits of the
flat base for accuracy with the benefits of the boattail
for lower base drag.
