This is an INTERNAL (INT) PUNCH which fits a LT-1-S Lead TIp die or the LT-1-SC Jacket Tip Closer die (same die, with different internal punches). The purpose is to nudge the open tip or meplat diameter to a smaller opening. In some cases the open tip can be completely closed down, but generally the reduction is more like half the original diameter, limited by the strength of the jacket, which in turn is limited by its hardness, thickness, alloy, the ogive shape and the amount of core material supporting the ogive area. This punch looks like a lead tip internal punch used for finishing the lead tips, but in fact it is not the same. It has a different shape for the same ogive specification, in order to apply pressure first at the edge of the jacket, rather than spread evenly across the engagement area. The force is vectored inward instead of straight back. This pushes the tip toward the centerline of the bullet and makes it smaller. In order to avoid wearing too quickly from the concentration of force in a narrow ring (and from the potential accumulation of abrasive debris from airborne dust which can act as a lapping compound under concentrated pressure), the -SJ punch is made of a different alloy from conventional lead tip punches, and is heat treated to a greater hardness. The cavity tip is also relieved to allow the smallest potential compression of the tip without blockage by lube or trapped air. All this makes the jacket tip closer punch more time consuming to build and test than a conventional internal punch, and is the reason it is priced differently.
