This is a point forming (ogive shaping) die to fit the -S press. It differs from a standard PF-1-S in that the ogive shape and/or the bullet diameter is not one of the standards, and thus it requires making custom reamers and laps to cut and diamond lap the die cavity. The difference in cost partly covers the additional time for one-off setup of the machinery to make one die to order, and partly to cover some of the cost of making special reamers and laps.

Although we have a PF-1-SC Custom point forming die listed, the "custom" can cover many other special features that a person might desire, in addition or instead of a custom shape or special non-stock diameter. This die is also a custom die, but the custom work is limited to either the non-standard shape or size (or both, since it takes a new reamer and lap set either way).

Sometimes a shape that is standard for a pistol is ordered in a rifle caliber, which means that although both the shape and the diameter are standard as separate items, the combination of the two is unusual and will still require custom tooling. Or the opposite can happen, when a person needs a rifle ogive shape on a pistol diameter, and the combination is not something we'd normally stock or have tooling to build. In those cases, we also must make a new set of reamers and laps before we can build the die.

Please note that you do not need to fill in every blank, just the ones in bold that are required. If you don't know a dimension, just leave it blank or enter "standard" or use the "NOTE" to tell us what you want. If you are sending a sample to copy, please use the NOTE to let us know that. Or if you already sent one, remind us with the "NOTE". If the things you enter are contradictory or won't work (such as asking for a .047 ejection pin size on a .308 bullet diameter where the minimum size that will not bend is about 0.081 and recommended size is 0.091) then we'll contact you and discuss it before proceeding.

The standard rifle ogive shapes are:
  • 0.5-E (half ball round nose)
  • 1-E (conventional elliptical round nose shape for rifles)
  • 6-S (the most popular shape, six-caliber long radius tangent ogive curve)
  • 8-S (somewhat longer, more pointed nose for higher BC but increases length)
  • 10-S (long range spitzer shaped ogive)
  • ULD (Ultra Low Drag hybrid ogive which is a combination of tangent and secant curves)
  • ULD-TIP (a triple hybrid shape that includes an 11-degree metal tip insert for the ultimate high BC in a given caliber and weight -- a special 25-degree ULD-TIP called the "pin-point" tip is also made for short, large bore bullets such as 45 airgun and 450 Bushmaster styles.)
The standard pistol ogives shapes are:
  • 0.5-E (half ball shape, such as the 9.3 Makarov)
  • 3/4-E (similar to most of the so called round nose pistol shapes, actually elliptical)
  • TC (truncated conical shape, a spire or angled nose with various meplat sizes)
Standard diameters:
The standard just means "likely to be on the shelf, because we have enough demand and have built tooling to make them". It doesn't mean other diameters are wildcats or don't have SAAMI specifications. Just means "standard for us". Other sizes such as .102, .104, .142, .223, and all the other sizes listed in most cartridge encyclopedias may at some point become standard if we get enough demand, but generally are custom since we need to build the tooling.

Standard rifle calibers would include the .172, .204, .224, .243, .257, .264, .277, .284, .308, .312, .318, .323, .338, .348, .358, .366, .375, .400, .408, .411, .416, .423, .458, .475, and .512.

Standard pistol calibers would include the .224 (or the .223 variant), .251, .308, .311, .312, .314, .355, .357, .40, .410, .429, .452, and .500.

Sometimes clients ask, "If you ever made one before, why don't you still have the tooling and therefore why can't you just call it standard now?"

That is a good question. The answer is that tooling for a one-off custom job is made in a more simple design that is quicker and less costly to build than a high production reamer, and the laps are generally made in bulk lots for standard shapes and sizes. Making more expensive multi-fluted reamers for production would be too costly for a one-off job. Making a large number of standard laps at one setup time cuts the cost of each lap considerably, but we don't need 20 laps to build one custom die. The laps and reamers wear down after use, so they are no longer effective. Production reamers will cut many more dies than the single flute custom reamers, but are much more time consuming to build.

So if we build a custom reamer and set of laps to make your .333 OKH bullet in a special, copy-this-sample design, we can make one die with it, possibly even two, and then we'd need to make a new reamer and laps. If over the next year we got fifty more orders for the same exact size and shape of bullet die, we'd make production tooling and groups of laps all at one time, and put that bullet die in our "standard" list so we could offer it for the standard price. But we'd still have done the one-off work the first time, so no, we couldn't afford to go back and offer a refund for the difference on the first one! Wish it were so, but the labor already was invested and paid for on that first custom job, and it wasn't until later that the shape or size became a new standard at lower cost. It's not arbitrary pricing, but is based on the actual costs involved to be able to do this sort of work and stay around for 40 years or more!
