PCS-2 Magnum Core Cutter is primarily used for
cutting lead wire of .390 and .430 diameters, but can
also be used for smaller sizes. The minimum length is the
thickness of the half-inch steel lever, whereas the PCS-1
can cut as short as 1/4-inch lengths.
This massive tool is nearly five times as heavy and more
than twice the length of the PCS-1 core cutter. It uses
the PCS-2D dies (one in the top or fixed mounting bar, and
one in the movable lever) which can be made for up to half
inch diameter wire. The largest standard wire is .430,
since heavier wire would be more like a bar, not easily
coiled or uncoiled without kinking.
The PCS-2 is the best choice even for small calibers if
the length of core does not have to be shorter than half
an inch, and if one expects to use wire larger than .365
at some future point. Otherwise, the smaller PCS-1 will
do the job as well (better for very short cores) at a lower
cost for both the tool and the optional, additional dies.
Each PCS-2 comes with your choice of one set of standard
dies for a given wire diameter. Other dies can be added
as needed. The tool mounts on your loading bench. Wire is
normally fed down from the top, often from an improvised
holder that allows the entire spool of wire to be suspended
over the cutter. Such a holder can be assembled from 1/2
or 3/4 inch iron pipe, with a pipe flange base and an el-
connector (right angle). Simply pull off a length of wire
and feed it down into the dies until it contacts the
adjustable stop screw, move the handle to cut the wire,
and move it back to feed in more wire.
