Base Guard(tm) disks are attached to the base of a lead bullet when the bullet is swaged. To do so, the normal flat base core seat or lead swc punch is replaced with one having a small round depression in the center. The lead then extrudes through a hole in the center of the BG disk, and forms a rivet head securing the disk to the bullet base. The disk is free to rotate under pressure, so that if the bullet slips in the rifling, the disk remains locked to the rifling, and prevents gas leakage. The edge of the disk faces the bore, and scrapes fouling from the bore as the bullet is fired. The BG disk is slightly conical prior to swaging. When swaged, it flattens and grows to the size of the die, making it precisely the same diameter as the bullet. Thus, one BG disk can fit a narrow range of different bullet diameters. BG disks are sold in packages of 1000. They are generally more economical than Gas Checks, and actually work better to prevent and remove fouling.
