The PUNCH-HX is a cruciform or x-shaped punch used either
in a configuration for the core swage die, or the core
seating die (or rebated boattail die) to make a cross-cut
in the core. This helps the bullet expand on impact at
lower velocity, with a more evenly distributed mushroom.
When used in a core swage die, the space between the segments
will of course be collapsed when the core is later swaged
into a jacket. Lubricants or thin plastic or paper strips
inserted into the slots prior to seating will prevent
the segments from re-joining under pressure. When used in
the core seating die or the BT-2 final rebated boattail
forming die, the core is extruded forward, becoming
longer. It is highly desirable to bond the core to the
jacket with Corbin Core Bond so that the grip of the core
on the eight sides of the four punch blades does not pull
the core back out of the jacket on ejection.
The core must be made of soft lead or other easily deformed
material to avoid breaking the blades. Likewise, the end
of the core must be preformed as a smooth, flat surface.
If the core is cut and dropped into a jacket, or into
a core swage die, and immediately compressed with the
X-punch, the blades may be torqued to the side with
enough force to snap them. When entering a smooth, flat
soft lead core, the force is all in the downward
direction, parallel to the punch axis, so there is little
or no sideways torque on the thin blades.
When the punch is used as intended, it is more than
strong enough for a lifetime of bullet making. It is a
key tool for making effective subsonic bullets used for
hunting or defense.
