The SAW-1 and SAW-2 with heavy duty DC motors use two of these carbon brushes. The brushes eventually wear down and require replacement. Normally they wear about the same amount, and should be replaced together. They are installed easily without disassembling the motor (simply unscrew the caps, remove the old brushes,and install the new ones).
