This is a complete kit including the CSP-1 S-press, dies and supplies to manufacture the hollow ogive style of air gun slug. It can of course also be ordered in calibers useful for black powder (muzzle loader) with or without sabot. The dies don't object to any purpose you have in mind for their perfect projectiles!

Easy Order Option:
You can simply select one of the standard slug diameters along with its standard ogive, meplat and hollow point shape from the drop down menu, and leave all other blanks empty or with the default choices. This will result in the most popular slug parameters, the same as we build for most of the commercial producers.

With the hollow ogive style of slug, the hollow point parameters listed are not used but you CAN get a spare ejector with those parameters, and make solid ogive HP slugs also. The actual hollow point cavity is larger inside than at the opening, which would be impossible to form with a HP ejector punch. It can only be formed by making a hollow ogive cylinder and rolling the "walls" around to form the ogive. But the ejector pin size still controls the final bullet tip or meplat width.

You DO NOT need to fill in any blanks or know any specs other than the diameter you want. Even the weight is just to make sure your expectations are within reason, since minimum and maximum weight possible with one die are quite a span. You can fill the die with lead or you can have a very short shank to get the lightest possible slug in that ogive shape and caliber. The die will adjust the weight precisely to whatever you set it for with the top or exteral punch position.

Please note that prices for STANDARD dimensions are shown. If you want to send sample slugs for the die makers to carefully measure and try to match the base, hollow point or other measurements, there is a $70 custom cost for the extra time required to make a custom, one-off hollow point ejector that matches the measurements taken from your samples, and for custom base punches matching a sample. Samples have to be carefully disected and measured inside the cavities as well as outside, so there is considerable time and labor involved just to find out what the dimensions actually may be. Generally the standards will perform equally well or may even be the same, but matching samples still requires the die maker's time to discover those measurements, regardless of what they are. This is indicated by adding "C" to the catalog number to indicate it is a custom job made to match samples or client specs rather than our normal standard dimensions.

The main difference between the KIT-3SP hollow ogive slug kit, and the KIT-2SP solid ogive slug kit, is that the KIT-3SP has a pre-forming core swage to create a large hollow ended cylinder. Then this cylinder is formed into a slug WITHOUT pushing it so far in that there is any lead extrusion in the second or point forming die.

This is a very important difference in operation. With the single PF-1-SP die, you DO need to pressurize the entire lead core and extrude a little lead, to get a consistent weight and complete formation of the slug. But when you use the hollow ogive preforming die, you do NOT want to pressurize the entire core so it extrudes more lead. All the weight control is done in the first die. The point form die is used, in this case only, to roll the walls of the hollow cylinder end around and from a nose shape, and then STOP pressing as soon as the ogive is formed.

You would approach this like handloading: a little more pressure at a time until you get a good slug. If you just thrown your weight on the press handle, so to speak, you will totally collapse the hollow ogive that was created in the core swage or "pre-swage" die. All you get is a shorter than desired solid ogive, or a bullet that has too little mass of lead to even fill up the entire ogive.

This is a very important concept to grasp before you start. VERY LITTLE pressure is used in the ogive formation, and you NEVER extrude any lead through the bleed holes of the point form die when making hollow ogive slugs.

Another critical, money-saving point (to avoid ruining the base punches):
The base punch must NEVER be driven into the ogive of the point form die. The punch has a "max insertion" line on it. If you adjust the punch holder so that the line goes past the mouth of the die and disappears into the die, you probably just destroyed the punch.

The reason is that the punch will be rolled over at the edge if it is forced into the curved ogive part of the point form die. Then the base of each bullet will have a lead flashing or flange from that point on. If your base punch does not have a line inscribed around it to indicate insertion depth limit into the die, you can easily determine where to mark the die with a marker pen so you never insert the punch any further than that.

Here is how to determine the insertion limit:
  1. Find a thin wire that will go into the little bleed hole on the side of the point forming die. The hole is a two diameter design, larger on the outside for relief of friction, so make sure your little strand of wire actually is going completely into the die and touching the other side of the cavity.
  2. With the wire in place, hold the die in your hand and put the base or external punch into the die carefully by hand. It should be a snug fit. Push it in until it contacts the wire but don't force it to bend the wire. Just gently come up against it, to act like a gauge or stop.
  3. Check to see if the wire is being gently held by the end of the punch, or if you bent it over, or if it is not really touching the punch tip. Make sure. What this does is positions the punch so the end just comes to the bleed hole. The bleed hole is just below the start of the ogive.
  4. Now mark the punch with a permanent ink marker where the punch just starts to go into the die mouth. Now you know exactly how far you can insert the punch into that die before the end starts to get peened over by entering the ogive area.

Hollow Ogive Airgun Slug The maximum diameter is .458 inches. For larger sizes, use the -H type dies in the CSP-2 Mega Mite or CHP-1 Hydro Press. We make 50 caliber for use in the CSP-2 or Hydro Press, in -H type dies, but not in the smaller diameter -S type.

Here is what is included:
  1. CSP-1 S-press
  2. CSW-1-S core swage die with hollow nose punch and your choice of base
  3. PF-1-SP smooth ogive swage die with long, hollow-ogive ejector punch, matching base punch
  4. LW-10 lead wire in appropriate diameter for your caliber
  5. PCS-1 core cutter with die insert to cut the wire (so long as it is .390 or smaller, otherwise we must substitute the PCS-2 which adds a small amount to the price).
  6. CSL-2 swage lube
  7. DVD and CD-ROM Handbook of Swaging, written instructions, press accessories normally sent with the CSP-1.
Note that the PF-1-SP can be used to make the standard hollow point or solid tip slugs as well, but you would then want to order additional ejection punches for that purpose. You can also change the base shape with additional external punches if you wish. The weight is adjustable. Only the caliber, ogive shape, and tip width (meplat) itself is controlled by the die dimensions and would require a different die set in order to change it.
