The ET-2-R Expand/Trim die is a jacket trimmer which fits into a conventional 7/8-14 thread, T-slot ram reloading press (like the famous "RCBS RockChucker"). It is adjustable for length of jacket, and pinches off the surplus length which sticks out from the die mouth. The length is set by a stop in the top of the 7/8-14 threaded die holder. A setting jig consisting of a hardened rod and a collar with thumb screw is used to adjust the length of the jacket, by inserting this assembly into the die mouth with the collar set to the length of the desired jacket. The adjustable threaded rod at the top is then set to just begin to push this rod, so it forms the stop position for the rod and later, the jacket closed end.

The punch fits into the press ram. The ram is then raised up and the die adjusted until it just barely touches the punch at the top of the press stroke. Make sure that the ram can go no further, so that the punch is not driven hard into the edge of the die, rolling it over and preventing it from cutting the jacket.

The jacket is then placed on the punch tip, the ram is raised, and the jacket is scored nearly all the way through (but a thin cushion is left between the die and punch to protect the sharp die edge). Lower the ram and the jacket probably will stay in the die. If so, tap the knock out rod at the top of the die to push out the jacket.

The jacket is not completely cut off. It has a deep score around the circumference, which is about 90% of the way through the wall. A slight effort with fingers or a small needle nose plier will pop off the ring of jacket still attached weakly to the jacket. Or the jackets can be tumbled polished, which also tends to knock off the trim ring automatically.
