The DDS-1-S looks like a core seating die, but it has a dual diameter cavity designed to reduce the diameter of a finished bullet for part of its length, which is adjustable.

A DDS-1-S can be ordered to make a reduced base (heel base) or more commonly, to make a reduced nose and forward shank portion (bore rider). Typically, the amount of reduction is .008 inches (which allows .004 inch rifling depth per side).

For example, a bore riding .308 bullet would use a DDS-1-S die with major diameter of .308 and minor diameter of .300. The purpose of this would be (1) to reduce bore friction and gain velocity and energy over a conventional design, and (2) to allow the bullet nose to slide into the leade and over the top of the rifling without encountering resistance, so that the gun would not jam as a result of the bullet being seated slightly too long from the case neck.

Heel base bullets are exemplified by the common 22 LR rimfire cartridge. The bullet is held into the case by a reduced heel at the base. This is the ancient "outside lubed" bullet design, as opposed to having the bullet slide down into the case with any lube grooves covered by the case neck.

When you order a DDS-1-S dual diameter sizing die, you need to specify these things:
  1. Major diameter (size of original bullet)
  2. Minor diameter (diameter to which you wish to reduce part of the bullet)
  3. Base shape of the original bullet
  4. Nose shape or ogive of the original bullet

These four factors are used to build your die. When you use a DDS-1-S die with a lead tip bullet, you do not have to pre-form the lead tip in a LT-1-S die. You can use the internal punch of the DDS-1-S to form the lead tip shape during ejection, since the pressure required to push the sized bullet out of the die will be more than enough to reshape the lead tip.

The DDS-1-S is very specific to a certain caliber, nose and base shape, but the nose and base punches can be changed so you use the same die with other shapes in the same diameter.
